Mt. Hope Elementary School

“Good Learners; Good People”

Mt. Hope Elementary School is a community of staff, students, and parents, who work together to be both good learners as well as good people. We want to be people of character who will be lifelong learners.

The learning atmosphere at Mt. Hope is one of high expectations, yet low anxiety. We provide a safe, clean, orderly learning environment. Our staff is made up of people who love children and like to make learning fun. Teachers not only get along well with each other, but they share instructional ideas and help each other grow professionally.

We are one of only a few Ohio schools to have been named to the “Schools of Promise” list three times by the state superintendent. This award is based on high academic achievement in spite of low income.

Mt. Hope has been an OhioReads school since 1999. This grant program has allowed our school to incorporate a strong volunteer mentoring program as well as a reading motivational program called Scholastic ReadingCounts! Grant money has also provided a wealth of literacy materials including books for our guided reading library and classroom libraries. At Mt. Hope we take literacy instruction very seriously. Teachers have shown a tremendous amount of professional growth in this area in recent years. Our staff and students love great books.

We also provide a number of other literacy programs such as Books for Babies, Kindergarten StoryBoost, Reading Recovery, and Title I Reading.

Student performance in math has traditionally been a very strong area for our school, partly because of solid classroom instruction and hard work on the part of the students, but also partly due to the classroom management used by several teachers. In many classrooms, students earn “money” in a variety of ways such as through classroom jobs. They keep track of income and expenses, learn to save, and enjoy spending some of it at special auctions or stores.

We have a very focused character education program called CharacterFirst! Each month we study a different positive character trait such as responsibility. We have character assemblies in which we learn definitions, poems, songs, and stories to illustrate the trait. We believe our children will be better learners and better people if they keep improving character traits such as attentiveness, creativity, determination, and enthusiasm.

Other services and programs at Mt. Hope include German instruction, art, and music. We have an outstanding library which includes a wide selection of books on tape. We serve a hot lunch each day. Older students participate in softball games with other schools three times in the fall and three times in the spring.

Our children come from strong families where the values of hard work, honesty, and integrity are taught and modeled.

Mt. Hope is a great place to grow as a lifelong learner and as a person of character.
